Serenity in the City: Mantis Monarch Hotel

Located in the trendy cosmopolitan suburb of Rosebank, Johannesburg is the chic five-star Monarch Hotel.  We had the wonderful opportunity to stay here during our recent visit to Johannesburg.  As we drove up to the well manicured garden and opulent building we admired the impressive entrance detailed with decorative wrought iron doors.  While marveling at the beauty of this once iconic 1930’s Saxonworld Post office, a security guard greeted us and kindly guided us to their secure parking behind the hotel.  After helping us with our luggage we were escorted through a secluded and serene courtyard to the reception.

The reception presented a very relaxed, yet sophisticated feeling of comfort and elegance.   Once checked in, we were lead to our luxury suite on the ground floor overlooking the hotel’s private courtyard.  While walking through the hotel we passed well decorated passages, refined finishes and an extensive art collection, which is represented throughout the hotel.  The hotel features art from South African artists such as Walter Battiss, Ruan Hoffmann, and Brett Murray.

Upon entering our suite, the spaciousness and grandeur of the decor caught our attention, and we knew at first glance, this was going to be a very comfortable stay.  After settling in and enjoying lunch in the peaceful courtyard, we were off to discover what Rosebank had too offer.   The Monarch hotel is well located within walking distance of designer malls, restaurants, bars, nightlife, as well as the Gautrain station (which can take you to and from the airport in less than 20 minutes).

Upon returning to the hotel in the late afternoon, we were pleased to find our room had been serviced for a romantic turndown.  This intimate setting prompted us to spend the rest of our evening in the comfort of our room with only a brief interruption to have room service delivered.  We enjoyed lamb curry and a gourmet burger from the hotel’s restaurant that was promptly delivered and elegantly presented.  In our opinion, room service for dinner is the perfect first night to any honeymoon!

After having a well rested night in the luxurious sheets and comfortable bed, we made our way to breakfast.  We sat down in the bright dining room and were greeted by our server, Thomas, who took our breakfast order and directed us to this amazing spread of fruits, salmon, cold meats, cereals and exceptional cheeses.  The Monarch definitely offers an amazing breakfast and the Eggs Benedict — Brenden’s favorite — may very well have been the best he’s had.

We had a very memorable stay at the Monarch Hotel.  Jan (General Manager) and his team made us feel incredibly welcome.  From the moment we arrived to when we checked out, we were received with exceptional service from the very attentive and friendly staff.  We would highly recommend this five-star boutique hotel to any couple, tourist and business traveler.   The Monarch is the sophisticated, personalized and opulent hotel, located in the center of it all, to make your stay in Johannesburg remarkable.
