Located in the heart of Port Elizabeth’s posh Summerstrand neighborhood is the Mantis No. 5 Boutique Art Hotel. Hidden behind the understated privacy wall and gate, is a city oasis awaiting the most discerning traveler. If you are seeking five star accommodations without the stuffiness, this is your haven.
From first entry, the hotel may remind you of the art deco condo flats that line South Beach in Miami, appearing modestly small even. But, step inside and an expansive luxurious setting will unfold. With ten thoughtfully designed suites, you will find these surroundings ideal for your business travel, as well as, romantic holiday needs.
The hotel common areas provide an inviting ambiance to sit and relax during your stay. From the sunny pool deck with lap pool and ample lounge chairs to work on your tan, as well as several tables to enjoy lunch or dinner alfresco, to the adjacent Champagne Lounge that provides a comfortable area to sit and relax with a glass of wine, you are sure to find your favorite retreat within the hotel.
My favorite room was the fifteen seat Mount Batten Movie Theatre that is a replicate of the theatre Prince Charles enjoys at Clarence House in Central London. While time did not afford us the opportunity, guests can enjoy an evening with their favorite movie while being looked after by the friendly and accommodating staff. The romantic in me would have loved to have watched Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant’s “Knotting Hill” in this intimate theatre.
While I enjoy the solitude of a good movie, Brenden’s favorite areas of the hotel included the secluded wine cellar with stately sixteen-seat dining table and the Whiskey & Cigar Lounge. Uniquely, the private wine cellar is available to couples or parties wanting to enjoy a special romantic dinner or event.
Finally, there is a work-out facility for those wanting to stay fit during their stay. I was beyond pleased to find a PowerPlate here, my absolute favorite workout! And a luxurious spa….more on that later in our next blog!
Across the street from the main building is Villa 2010, a private three-suite villa complete with its own swimming pool, kitchen, dining/conference table, and sitting area. The Soccer and World Cup themed villa, erected for the 2010 World Cup that particularly took place in Port Elizabeth is aptly decorated in soccer and sports themed sculptures, paintings, and other artwork.
With so many natural wonders and activities like the breathtaking beaches, annual Sardine Migration or numerous game and wildlife reserves in and around Port Elizabeth, No. 5 is the ideal oasis to be in the center of it all.
