Friday was a day full of activity! It was also Brenden’s birthday! We had arrived at Alila Ubud late in the afternoon the day before. You may have heard of this resort from several travel publications, for instance, in 2012 CNN Travel ranked the pool at Alila Ubud #10 of 15 of the Most Spectacular Swimming Pools in the World.
After a hearty breakfast at the open-aired resort restaurant, Brenden and I were treated to an incredible hour long couples spa treatment at Spa Alila. Brenden enjoyed a full body massage, while I enjoyed one of the best facials I’ve ever experienced. After our relaxing spa, we decided to enjoy some pool time before taking the hotel’s mountain bikes out for a spin through the rice fields. It was a scenic ride, though we didn’t go far as the traffic on the main road is scary in a car, let alone on a foreign bike!
After our ride, we retired to a our room to freshen up. That evening we had been invited to a cocktail hour at the hotel’s art gallery. Each month they feature a budding local artist to show their art and provide them with an opportunity and venue to sell their pieces. We enjoyed mingling with the artist and other guests while admiring the beautiful abstract pieces.
Finally, it was time for dinner and as though they knew it was Brenden’s birthday, the hotel had organized their Spice Market Buffet, complete with musical and dance entertainment performed by the local villagers. This allowed us to enjoy all the best of Balinese cuisine, including the famous Suckling Pig, which had been hand-turned on the spit since mid-afternoon. Brenden was in “Hog Heaven” (pardon the pun, I couldn’t help myself) as he enjoyed grilled seafood, meat, and countless sides. It was the perfect culinary way to celebrate Brenden’s big day.
